Bringing your spiritual self into the workplace

In this post, I'm referring to spirituality as being your own personal, core set of values or principles – not in the context of a third party, like religion. Things like being true to your 'self', respectful, bringing a sense of peace into the workspace, being empathetic, honest and compassionate with those around you.

For me personally, it is important that I like and respect those I work with and that they are genuinely nice people to work with. I do not accept disrespect directed towards me, and will quickly remove or limit my interaction with people who think this is OK. The more I practice this, the more I find I am working with great people in a fun and positive environment.

Practicing spirituality in your working life does not mean you can’t show strength when you need to or as your job calls for it. For example, on occasions when you need to set boundaries, be a pro-active leader and manage other people’s expectations, actions and behaviours, rather than display disappointment, disapproval or anger, you might show empathy, understanding and support.

Spiritual values in the workplace is about practicing your personal ethics in a subtle, almost invisible way through action – what you are ‘putting out there’ through what you say and do.

Obviously, if a workplace’s values are totally misaligned with your own and you can’t seem to effect positive change around you, it may be worth contemplating whether you’re in the right workplace. If you find your integrity is constantly questioned or put at risk, or if you can’t find value or meaning in the work you do, imagine how much improved your life might be if you spent the majority of your day-to-day in a workplace that valued, guided and supported you.

3 ways to bring your spiritual values into the workplace:

  1. Bring your ‘authentic self’ to work in a kind, considerate way that benefits not only yourself, but others around you.

  2. Practice ethical behaviour, striving to lead by example i.e. how you expect to be treated is how you treat others.

  3. Cultivate the right mindset that supports feelings of happiness in your work environment and contributes to better decision-making.
